Cutting fluid for machining – metalworking fluids (MWFs)
Cutting fluid (also known as metalworking fluid, MWF) reduces the temperature in the cutting zone and decreases friction at the tool-material interface. In practice, this translates to longer tool life, better surface quality, and a more stable process on conventional and CNC machine tools.
Application and characteristics of cutting fluids
During milling, turning, drilling, or threading, high temperatures are generated due to friction and material deformation. A well-selected machine tool coolant helps dissipate heat, reduces built-up edge (BUE) formation, improves chip evacuation, and can temporarily protect the component from corrosion. For machining operations requiring a high-quality surface finish (e.g., grinding), intensive cooling capability is also essential.
Depending on the operation and material, different types of MWFs are used:
- neat oils – excellent lubricating properties, recommended for more demanding cutting conditions and operations requiring a "strong" lubricating film,
- water-soluble / water-based fluids – high cooling efficiency, often utilized in processes focused on heat dissipation,
- emulsion fluids – a compromise between cooling and lubrication; a popular choice for multi-operation machining on CNC machine tools.
When selecting a cutting fluid, consider the type of workpiece material, tooling, cutting speed, depth of cut, feed rate, and the method of fluid delivery (flood cooling or through-spindle cooling). For process stability, the proper emulsion concentration, continuous delivery, and monitoring of the fluid's condition during operation are also critical.
